We’re singing the pitches in color this month in Sing Rainbows, but in truth we do this all the time. Kids’ burgeoning awareness and excitement about color provides another way into music and movement, and when we join the visual, motor, and auditory in simple ways, children can use one to help make sense of the others. The activities and some of the tracks below use color as a simple visual cue for exploring musical ideas. Our goal isn’t to teach babies and toddlers to read music through color, but to give them an easy way into music-and-movement patterns and play. Hope you’ll try some of this at home, and see where it takes you!

Start Here: “Color Wheel Song”

We love exploring ways that the seven diatonic pitches can be reflected in the seven colors of the rainbow, and this song came out of that kind of play. Idea: Replace the “imaginary paintbrushes” with real ones and see how many colors you can make with red, yellow, and blue.
